Dickensfestijn Deventer



Algemene informatie
De 19e eeuwse Engelse stad van Charles Dickens herleeft ook in 2009 weer in volle glorie in het centrum van Deventer. In het historische Bergkwartier komen op za 19 en zo 20 december ruim 900 personages uit de beroemde boeken van deze Engelse schrijver tot leven: van Scrooge tot Oliver Twist, van Mr. Pickwick tot Christmas Carol Singers, van weeskinderen tot dronkaards, van kantoorklerken tot deftige lieden. Het Dickens Festijn is beide dagen van 11.00 tot 17.00 uur.
Het gratis toegankelijke festijn wordt jaarlijks bezocht door ruim 150.000 bezoekers: helaas dient er dus rekening gehouden te worden met een wachttijd bij de toegang.
In het kader van het Dickens Festijn speelt Musical- en Operette vereniging Deventer de musical ‘Scrooge’ in de Deventer Schouwburg. Deze geheel vernieuwde kerstvoorstelling is te zien van vrijdagavond 18, zaterdag 19 (middag en avond) en zondagmiddag 20 december.

Daarnaast vindt van do 17 t/m za 19 december de jaarlijkse Kerstmarkt in de Grote of Lebuïnuskerk plaats. Op 19 december vindt de wekelijkse warenmarkt plaats en op 20 december is er een Kerstmarkt. Op 20 december is het tevens Kerstkoopzondag in de binnenstad.
Bovendien vinden er op zo 20 december onder de titel ‘Deventer Kerststad’ tal van gratis toegankelijke concerten plaats in de kerken met deelname van koren en muziekverenigingen uit Deventer en omgeving. De toegang tot het Dickens Festijn en Deventer Kerststad is gratis.

GNE betrokkenheid
GNE Deventer is uiteraard weer op het Dickens Festijn in de Bergkerk op vrijdagavond 18 december (17 tot 21 uur) en in het weekend van 19 en 20 december aanwezig.

Het Dickens Museum te London heeft ook weer een tentoonstelling. De Bergkerk zal op vrijdagavond 18 dec. van 17 to 21 uur open zijn voor bezoekers.
 
GNE leden wordt aangeraden om op vrijdagavond een bezoek aan de tentoonstelling te brengen omdat het dan niet zo druk is in de straten. Wel zijn er dan nog geen verklede figuren op straat.
 

Lectures

During the GNE lecture season, talks are given about once a month and unless otherwise stated, these are delivered in English. The visiting speakers are all experts in their chosen fields and their lectures are both informative and entertaining. They may feature different aspects of British life, arts and culture, places and people. Occasionally we are also treated to a traveller`s tale. Wherever possible, lectures are illustrated.

John Pilkington: A Stroll through the Axis of Evil
John`s talk is titled `A Stroll through the Axis of Evil`; Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Iran are in the news for all the wrong reasons. Starting in Beirut, John will unravel a picture quite different to the news stories as he followed a winding route via the Euphrates, the Caucasus and the Valley of the Assassins to finish on the Persian Gulf. John Gilroy: Tyger, Tyger or The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere
John Gilroy retired from his post as Senior Lecturer in English at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge in 2005, but still teaches in its department part-time. He also teaches for the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education on both its residential courses and its international summer schools for which he is a course director.
John has lectured widely in Britain and internationally for organisations such as The English-Speaking Union, ‘Inscape’ Fine Art Tours and for GNE. He specialises in literature of the Romantic period and has published on Wordsworth, Gerard Manley Hopkins and Philip Larkin. His latest book, ‘Romantic Literature’, for the new York Connections series will appear in 2010.
