The Twente Branch of the GNE was established in 1986 and comprises some 110 members. Practically every month throughout the season we have an illustrated lecture presented by a British speaker.  We also try to keep room for the social element: promoting contact between members through group activities such as English conversation groups, book discussions on English and American literature, and a rambling group. In addition, every year there`s a Christmas party and, in the summer, an End of Season event which usually involves an excursion.

Lectures: location and times

VENUE
Lectures are held at the Public Library in Hengelo (Ov), in the Beursplein building, Beursstraat 34. Close to the Central Station and various car parks, this modern venue is easily accessible. The restuarant `De Ontmoeting` on the ground floor is a pleasant place to meet. Members may like to arrive early for a pre-lecture supper, in which case they are requested be make a reservation at least three days in advance through Joop Bokkerink.

There`s more information about the library and its activities at www.bibliotheekhengelo.nl. For a route description in Dutch, click `Klantenservice` and then `Routebeschrijving`.
If you come by train : go to the front entrance of the the railway station, facing the bus terminal, opposite which is the Rabotheater. From here, turn left into the Beursstraat. The library is on the left hand side, just beyond the theatre and `De Buurman` restaurant.
If you come by car
From the Enschedesestraat, the road takes a 90 degree left turn into the Beursstraat.  The library is on the right.
Parking The nearest car parks are at the Bataafse Kamp (right turn off the Enschedesstraat), and the `multi-storey` on the Hofstedestraat, just behind the library. In the evening, parking in most designated areas (excl. the multi-storeys) is free, except on Thursdays (koopavond).

Bulletins

Like other branches, we produce our own English language newslettter, the `Bulletin`, which comes out about six times a season and is sent to all members. It contains information on coming lectures, reports on past activities, news, notices and various other items of interest.

Contributions are most welcome. Please submit articles and other suitable pieces to the editor, Ms Alison Morgan, email: info@alison-morgan.nl

THE BBC AWARDS
The BBC-GNE Young Writers and Public Speaking Awards are annual competitions for secondary school students in the Netherlands. Participants prepare an opinion piece in English, taking their subjects from one of a number of given topical themes. The preliminaries and semi-finals of the public speaking competition take place in various parts of the country, culminating in an exciting and prestigious National Final before a large audience. The short-listed entries of the writing competition are also presented at the National Final.

The Awards are sponsored by the BBC and a number of other companies, and are supported by the British Ambassador to the Netherlands. The organization of the competitions is undertaken by a working group headed by Hans Kräwinkel, branch chairman of GNE Twente. One of his many tasks is to coordinate the activities of GNE volunteers who assist in the running of the heats and the Final.

History
The public speaking competition was initiated in 1988 to mark the William and Mary Tercentenary. The young writers’ competition was added In 1995, the 75th anniversary of the founding of the GNE.

Lectures

During the GNE lecture season, talks are given about once a month and unless otherwise stated, these are delivered in English. The visiting speakers are all experts in their chosen fields and their lectures are both informative and entertaining. They may feature different aspects of British life, arts and culture, places and people. Occasionally we are also treated to a traveller`s tale. Wherever possible, lectures are illustrated.
An overview of this year`s programme is given below. For more details on the talks please click talks. For the full programme with dates, venues and entry fees per branch, please click branches.
John Pilkington: A Stroll through the Axis of Evil
John`s talk is titled `A Stroll through the Axis of Evil`; Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Iran are in the news for all the wrong reasons. Starting in Beirut, John will unravel a picture quite different to the news stories as he followed a winding route via the Euphrates, the Caucasus and the Valley of the Assassins to finish on the Persian Gulf. John Pilkington has been called “one of Britain’s greatest tellers of travellers’ tales”. Read more...
