Nieuwe ambassadeur Groot-Brittannië

I was born and brought up in Bolton, in the north west of England. After university at Cambridge and 2 years teaching English in Japan I joined the UK Foreign Office. My first overseas posting was in West Berlin. I was there when the Wall came down in 1989 – an incredible experience. I hope to join friends and colleagues from those days in Berlin later this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Wall.
After 2 years back in London, I worked in New York at the UK delegation to the UN, dealing with Security Council issues, including Liberia and Haiti. A posting to Paris followed, including a year on attachment at the French Foreign Ministry. It was in Paris that I married Tricia (whom I had met when we joined the FCO on the same day), and our 2 children Kate and Ben were born there. We moved to Brussels in 2001 where I was political counsellor at the UK delegation to NATO.
From there I returned to London as Head of the FCO’s counter-proliferation department, working in particular on strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. And then to The Hague. It’s been a varied and fascinating career so far. This posting already promises to be the best yet, not least because it’s a great place for me to pursue my interest in cycling and swimming...though my (often painful) pastime of watching Bolton Wanderers football club will have to be put on hold for a while!

English Speaking Union International Speaking Competition

Grand Final International Speaking Competition 2010
held at HSBC Headquarters, Canary Wharf, London
from 17 to 22 May

Theme: Speculation on Our Future

It was a most memorable and exciting week that started with a bit of uncertainty due to airport closures because of volcanic ash clouds but continued smoothly in a great atmosphere and with splendid weather. The Dutch candidates only narrowly missed a place in the Grand Final of the ESU Public Speaking Competition.

Our excellent participants Roza Rashaan (right) and Marjolein Wiersma (left) had meticulously adapted and prepared their speeches and performed quite well. All 80 competitors from 45 countries were offered a really fantastic 5-day programme with workshops in Dartmouth House (the ESU home) and trips to the Globe Theatre, BBC Television studios and Kensington Palace as well as a thrilling performance of Woman in Black in the Fortune Theatre. There was plenty of time for entertainment and ample opportunity to meet the other candidates. Friday 21 May started in Dartmouth House with 6 preliminary rounds for 13 or 14 competitors in the morning from which 6 participants could reach the Grand Final in the HSBC headquarters in the afternoon.

The winner of this year’s competition was Moataz Elisrawi (centre) from Lebanon with a speech entitled Ooops, I’m pregnant …..again
The runner-up was Karen Kar-wun Chan (left) from Hong Kong with Human, Humane, Humanity
The audience award went to Daniel Cullum (right) from New Zealand with  1, 2, 3… Push

All in all an wonderful experience highly to be recommended to anyone who is thinking of entering the competition next year!

Lectures

During the GNE lecture season, talks are given about once a month and unless otherwise stated, these are delivered in English. The visiting speakers are all experts in their chosen fields and their lectures are both informative and entertaining. They may feature different aspects of British life, arts and culture, places and people. Occasionally we are also treated to a traveller`s tale. Wherever possible, lectures are illustrated.
An overview of this year`s programme is given below. For more details on the talks please click talks. For the full programme with dates, venues and entry fees per branch, please click branches.
John Pilkington: A Stroll through the Axis of Evil
John`s talk is titled `A Stroll through the Axis of Evil`; Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Iran are in the news for all the wrong reasons. Starting in Beirut, John will unravel a picture quite different to the news stories as he followed a winding route via the Euphrates, the Caucasus and the Valley of the Assassins to finish on the Persian Gulf. John Pilkington has been called “one of Britain’s greatest tellers of travellers’ tales”. Read more...
