GNE Afdeling Twente

GNE Twente Branch

The Twente Branch of the GNE was established in 1986 and comprises some 110 members. Practically every month throughout the season we have an illustrated lecture presented by a British speaker.  We also try to keep room for the social element: promoting contact between members through group activities such as English conversation groups, book discussions on English and American literature, and a rambling group. In addition, every year there`s a Christmas party and, in the summer, an End of Season event which usually involves an excursion.

GNE Twente annual membership

The membership year runs from 1 July to 30 June and the subscription is:
€ 30,-  singles
€ 50,-  couples

JUBILEE CELEBRATION: 25 YEARS OF GNE TWENTE

GNE’s Twente branch was set up in September 1986 so in 2011 we celebrated our Silver Jubilee. This milestone was marked during a National Day on Saturday 10 September 2011, when some 100 GNE members and their partners came from all over the country to take part. The Jubilee programme began and ended at the hotel ‘Landgoed De Wilmersberg’ in De Lutte (near Oldenzaal). It included a lecture on the Dutch landscape painter Jacob Isaakzoon van Ruisdael, a buffet lunch and a visit to Bentheim Castle, the source of inspiration for some of Ruisdael`s greatest works. The weather was fine and the day was clearly enjoyed by all. At the end of the official event a small group went on to a local restaurant for a very pleasant open-air supper.

THE BBC and ESU AWARDS
The BBC and ESU Public Speaking, Young Writers and Digital Voice Awards are annual competitions for secondary school students in the Netherlands. Participants prepare an opinion piece in English, taking their subjects from one of a number of given topical themes. The preliminaries and semi-finals of the public speaking competition take place in various parts of the country, culminating in an exciting and prestigious National Final before a large audience. The short-listed entries of the writing competition are also presented at the National Final.

The Awards are sponsored by the BBC and a number of other companies, and are supported by the British Ambassador to the Netherlands. The organization of the competitions is undertaken by a working group headed by Hans Kräwinkel, branch chairman of GNE Twente. One of his many tasks is to coordinate the activities of GNE volunteers who assist in the running of the heats and the Final.

History
The public speaking competition was initiated in 1988 to mark the William and Mary Tercentenary. The young writers competition was added In 1995, the 75th anniversary of the founding of the GNE.
